Inspired by 'Give Us Credit' by Alex Counts, and 'Banker to the Poor' by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, I organized a 'friendraiser' comedy night with several friends who perform improv comedy." "Kashf Foundation is a microfinance institution in Pakistan...After listening to my friend talk about Kashf’s work and future plans, I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of its mission of poverty alleviation. I joined...and, in January 2007 was promoted to Head of Operations. In Pakistan, I see microfinance as a key to poverty alleviation...It really attacks at the root – the center point – of poverty." "My wife Mae-Ling and I had been donating to Grameen Foundation for several years, always requesting the funds to be used in China. In response to our first donation, Alex Counts (President of Grameen Foundation) actually responded himself. Since then, Grameen has been very proactive in contacting us whenever the organization has visited China." Read more of Alan and Mae-Ling's story - Alan and Mae-Ling Tien; Shanghai, China |

"In July 2006, I relocated to Shanghai with my family...While here, I knew I wanted to learn as much as possible about China, but I also wanted to take the opportunity to pursue my increasing interest in the world of microcredit. I had watched the microfinance movement - and Dr. Yunus' accomplishments - from the sidelines over the last few years, but, now, living in China, I wanted to finally get involved!"
